Pledge of Allegiance Program
Members of VFW Post 5815 and its Auxiliary have been giving presentations about the history of the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance to kindergartners and first graders in Lombard, IL, each fall since 2008. Each kindergarten and first grade class that participates receives a laminated copy of the Pledge of Allegiance, a letter from the VFW, and a folder. Each child receives a Pledge of Allegiance pencil, a patriotic coloring book, and a ruler with the names and images of all the U.S. Presidents, along with a certificate to be presented by the teacher upon successfully learning the words of the Pledge.
This program had begun as a pilot program at Park View School in 2006. In 2008 every kindergarten class in the Village of Lombard was sent an invitation to participate, and the presentation itself was expanded.
The two kindergarten teachers from Park View School posed with the three VFW members following the program in September 2008. Pictured (left to right) are Sigmund Faber, Romona Valenti, Giuseppe Volpe, Laura Pepke, and George Miller with the kindergarten teachers of Park View School.
This program has also been presented at a district boy scout and cub scout program. We especially enjoy seeing these young children reminding their parents and older siblings to stand when an American flag is passing during Lombard Lilac parades.
Members of this Post have also done presentations to older students about some of their experiences serving overseas in the military and have provided training to older students regarding properly displaying and folding the American flag.
